Divorce & Bankruptcy Sometimes Go Hand in Hand

At times, it may seem that divorce frequently comes after bankruptcy, or vice versa. Why do divorce and bankruptcy sometimes go hand in hand?

It is commonly known that money problems can cause a great deal of stress for any individual. The same applies to married couples. A spouse may believe that his or her financial difficulties are primarily the fault of the other spouse and may consider divorce to be the only option. On the other hand, a person who has recently filed for divorce may find that his or her financial situation has drastically changed. Many families throughout the U.S. rely upon two incomes to make it by. A divorce divides these incomes and also divides property and assets. It presents issues related to child support and/or spousal support as well. A divorcee may therefore find that he or she needs to consider bankruptcy as a means of eliminating debt.

If you are recently divorced or are considering a divorce and are also dealing with overwhelming debt that has left you wondering whether you should file for bankruptcy, we can help. At the my office I represent debtors throughout the Chicago area and are ready to see how we can put our experience to work for you.
